RWC Rewind USA: vs Japan in 1987

During the final weeks of waiting for Rugby World Cup 2019 to arrive Americas Rugby News will be taking a look back at some moments from past RWCs involving competitors from the Americas. In week three the feature team is the USA.

In day one of the series the feature is the USA Eagles’ pool match vs Japan in RWC 1987. It was the first ever RWC match involving both countries. What would be a highly competitive encounter went the way of the USA who claimed a 21-18 victory.

Despite the tournament final being played in Auckland, New Zealand the Eagles would play all of their matches in Australia in RWC 1987. This saw them facing both Japan and Australia in Brisbane while they took-on England in Sydney.
