During the final weeks of waiting for Rugby World Cup 2019 to arrive Americas Rugby News will be taking a look back at some moments from past RWCs involving competitors from the Americas. In week two the feature team is Canada.
In day one of the series the feature is Canada’s match against Fiji from RWC 1991. The pool match took place at the Stade Jean Dauger in Bayonne, France. It was game two of Pool 4 and the opening fixture of the campaign for Canada and Fiji.
RWC 1991 was the second tournament in Rugby World Cup history. In the inaugural edition Fiji had reached the Quarter Finals. This, alone, was sufficient for the Pacific Islanders to be well placed in Pool 4. The group consisted of Canada, Fiji, France and Romania.
The Canadians delivered a memorable performance dot begin their RWC 1991 campaign. They would win the match 13-3 which under contemporary scoring would be 14-3. The reason for this is that tries were worth 4 points rather than 5.
The match featured one try and it was a classic. Scoring in the left corner was the outstanding fullback Scott Stewart. He would combine with Steve Gray in a try which stands the test of time. The score also included impressive work from hooker Dave Speirs.
Canada’s remaining points came from three penalties to fly half Gareth Rees while Fiji’s three points were scored from a drop-goal by Waisale Serevi.
