Uruguay overcome Sudamérica XV in RWC Warm-Up

Uruguay overcame the Sudamérica XV this afternoon in a RWC warm-up match. Los Teros were 24-20 winners in a highly competitive encounter in which they had their ups and downs before ultimately playing the better rugby late in the match.

Not only did Uruguay end the match well but Los Teros were also the better team early on. Two quick tries saw the hosts holding a 12-0 lead. They came through hooker German Kessler and winger Nicolás Freitas. The former try was converted by Felipe Berchesi.

The Sudamérica XV hit-back with two tries of their own. The first score came from a maul which André Arruda scored from; while Joshua Reeves scored following a break from Alfredo Pueyrredón. Reeves would convert his own try to make it a 12-12 game.

Uruguay had an opportunity to score following their first conceded try. Instead they would be stopped just two meters out and the visitors would be able to recover the ball before scoring at the other end of the field.

Uruguay’s backs were sharp but were underused. Meanwhile the Sudamérica XV attacked again and found their way over for try number three. With the conversion off-target they would go ahead 17-12.

Toronto Arrows winger Leandro Leivas then went over for an impressive try. The score highlighted the threat that the backs were during the match. Replacements Federico Faravo landed the conversion to give Uruguay a two point lead.

The Sudamérica XV would regain the lead through Reeves. His penalty would be the final score of the match for the composite side. With it all points by the Sudamérica XV were officially scored by Brazilian test players.

Trailing 20-19 Uruguay had time to finish the match with more points. Crossing for his second try was Leivas which rounded off a four point victory to begin Los Teros’ home internationals before departing for the Rugby World Cup.

Uruguay will play their second of three RWC warm-up matches on Friday. They are to remain in Montevideo and to again play at the Estadio Charrúa. Their opposition will be Brazil with players set to arrive to join the Tupis who featured today in the composite Sudamérica XV side.

Los Teros’ final warm-up match will be against the Argentina XV on Saturday, September 07. The subsequent fixture for Uruguay will be their RWC 2019 opening match against Fiji in Kamaishi, Japan on September 25.
