RWC Rewind Uruguay: Teros vs Spain 1999

During the final weeks of waiting for Rugby World Cup 2019 to arrive Americas Rugby News will be taking a look back at some moments from past RWCs involving competitors from the Americas. First up as the feature Team of the Week is Uruguay.

In day five of the series the feature is Uruguay’s inaugural Rugby World Cup match. The game was played in Galashiels, Scotland with Los Teros facing Spain.

In itself the match carried historical value for it was the debut of both Uruguay, and Spain in a Rugby World Cup. The match was in Galashiels due to the entire pool being played in Scotland. Indeed despite it being Wales 1999 matches were spread throughout the UK, Ireland, and France.

Uruguay’s debut RWC appearance would be truly memorable. Captain Diego Ormaechea led by example in scoring a push-over try. There would be three additional tries from the South Americans with fullback Alfonso, center Martín Menchaca scoring and Uruguay also being awarded a penalty try.
