Chile overpowered Colombia in the Americas Rugby Challenge u20s on Sunday afternoon. A 44-10 victory saw Chile opening their campaign strongly in the inaugural competition taking place at the Estadio Héroes de Curupayty in Asunción, Paraguay.
Chile’s fine performance came with a dream start as just two minutes in Luca Strabucci handed Chile their first try. Additional tries to Lukas Carvallo, and Benjamín Goñi would see Chile leading 17-0.
Colombia hit-back in the 32nd minute with Jorge Gamboa crossing for an unconverted try to complete the first half scoring with Chile holding a twelve point advantage.
The second half began with a penalty slotted by Chile’s Luca Sandoval. Three minutes later Chile scored their fourth try with Lukas Carvallo touching down for a second time.
Lukas Carvallo would complete a hat-trick and also convert his third try. Chile would then go 44-5 ahead with Joaquín Milesi scoring an unconverted try.
With two minutes left to play Colombia would score for the second time to end the scoring with Chile being 44-10 winners.
Both Chile, and Colombia will play again on Wednesday. In the second round of the Americas Rugby Challenge u20s competition Chile will face Mexico while Colombia take-on hosts Colombia.
