Argentina end Canada’s Pan Am hegemony to claim Men’s Gold

Argentina ended Canada’s hegemony in the Pan American Games to claim Gold. Los Pumas 7’s 33-10 victory saw Canada missing out on Gold for the first time since Rugby 7’s was first played in the Pan American Games.

Rugby 7’s was introduced to the Pan American Games for the 2011 edition in Guadalajara, Mexico. Four years later the event took place in Toronto. In both tournaments Canada defeated Argentina in the final to claim Gold.

At the Lima 2019 Pan American Games Argentina made history. Los Pumas 7’s convincing win in the final completed an outstanding tournament for the Gold Medalists.

It started for Argentina on Friday. In their one match of the day Los Pumas 7’s were 52-0 winners over Jamaica. On Saturday Argentina played two matches, claiming a 32-0 win over Uruguay, and a 12-7 win over Canada.

Day Three saw the remaining matches played which for Argentina meant the Semi Final and either the Bronze Final or Final. In the Semi Final Los Pumas 7’s continued their impressive performances as they defeated the USA 31-7. This put them into the final in which they played even better to defeat Canada 33-10 and win Gold for the first time at the Pan American Games.
