Brazil no match for Uruguay at u20 Trophy

The South American champions proved their class once again on Wednesday as Uruguay routed hosts Brazil by a score of 52-10. It brought the curtains down on the pool stage and sets up a 3rd-place play-off for the Teritos against Tonga, and relegates Os Curumins to the 7th-place match against Hong Kong.

Carlos Gruss opening the scoring, the hooker coming up with the ball on a successful lineout drive just a few minutes into the match. Lucas Spago somehow pulled a routine penalty attempt to the right of the posts to leave three points begging for Brazil.

Instead Uruguay would push their lead out to 24-0 by halftime. Next to cross was Manuel Barreiro. The burly center bashed his way over on a hard line after another driving maul. Just a couple minutes later Juan Pablo Costabile was first to touch down a chip kick over the line from Federico Slinger. A pushover scrum gave Santiago Nicolich the easiest of tries to wrap up the first half.

Os Curumins finally got on the board early in the second as Spago connected on a penalty goal. Slinger went one better, however, slicing through the line to score a try for the Teritos. To their credit Brazil did not give up and captain-for-the-day Naassom Porto drove over from close range for a well-earned try.

Uruguay would do the remainder of the scoring. Baltazar Amaya scored a fine solo try as he took a short ball from the ruck on halfway and sped straight up the field, stepping the final defender. A penalty try for a dangerous tackle by Alisson Kalkmann put another seven on the board, and Amaya grabbed his double as Felipe Lombardo broke through and finished the textbook two-on-one.
