Glendale Raptors add Stephen Brett as Attack Coach

The Glendale Raptors have confirmed the addition of Stephen Brett as Attack Coach for the 2020 Major League Rugby season. He joins a new-look coaching staff headed up by former Canterbury teammate Peter Borlase, with Luke Gross in charge of defense and Nico Rithner covering strength and conditioning.

Just a year removed from a long professional career, the 33-year-old represented New Zealand at age-grade and Senior ‘A’ level, also appearing for the New Zealand Māori. Brett spent six seasons in Super Rugby with the Crusaders and Blues before moving first to Japan and then France, where he played the last five seasons before retiring at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.

A specialist flyhalf in his playing days, Brett was also an accomplished goal kicker who scored in excess of 1,300 points as a professional. He spoke to the official Raptors website about his recent move into coaching and his goals for next season.

“My mission will be to give them as much guidance with the experience I have gained over my playing career. Players these days are just getting bigger, faster and stronger so we have to be able to adapt, otherwise we will get left behind.

“I have a plan that will hopefully suit the coaches and the team’s needs and help the areas that they want to improve, but it will definitely be a fast playing attack with, of course, lots and lots of tries.”
