The Numbers: Jaguares Path to the Super Rugby Final

On Friday evening Los Jaguares made history. The Argentine Super Rugby franchise booked its place in the 2019 Final. The Gonzalo Quesada team did so in front of a record attendance for a non-international in Argentina of 31,000.

Getting to the final was also record breaking, and for Argentina it was confirmation that the catching-up is well on track. When rugby went professional in 1996 Argentina remained amateur. This would remain so for over three RWC cycles.

RWC 2007 would see changes made mandatory. They would come in the form of Argentina joining the Tri Nations to establish the Rugby Championship in 2012 and Super Rugby in 2016. Four years after the latter Los Jaguares are in the Final.

In the 2019 Super Rugby season Los Jaguares have scored a total of 521 points. It is far more than the total conceded of 375 points.

The player to have scored the most points is Joaquín Díaz Bonilla with 116. He was the starting fly half for Los Jaguares against the Brumbies in the Semi Final victory.

The team has scored 67 tries this season with Matías Orlando being the top scorer with eight tries. Two of them came in the Semi Final. The next best is Ramiro Moyano who has scored seven Super Rugby tries in 2019.

Of note for Los Jaguares this year was the defense. The team completed 2364 tackles. Leading the way is Marcos Kremer. The flanker has made, on average, 10.1 tackles per match in 2019.

Kremer featured in seventeen matches this season, making him tied for second spot overall. He joins Tomás Lavanini, Santiago Medrano, Matías Moroni, and Javier Ortega Desio. The player with the most appearances was hooker Julián Montoya with eigthteen total appearances.
