Free agency has been short-lived for Matt Tierney. After a cloudy episode that saw him suddenly depart Pau at the end of May, the Canadian prop has signed a senior deal with Castres Olympique that will see him stay in the Top 14 for at least the next two seasons.
Just a few days shy of his 23rd birthday, Tierney spent the past four seasons as part of Pau’s academy side. He made 19 appearances for the senior side in that time and in February signed a new three-year agreement through 2022. New management took over in April and an unspecified off-field incident saw his contract torn up at the end of the season.
It seems Castres, just one year removed from a Top 14 title, do not view whatever occurred as a problem. Tierney won’t have to move far, fewer than 300 km to the east in the south of France where he will join fellow Canadian international Taylor Paris. South American icons Rodrigo Capó Ortega and Benjamín Urdapilleta also remain on the books.
A new Director of Rugby will be waiting when Tierney returns from World Cup duty. Christophe Urios has departed for Bordeaux with two-time Pumas World Cup prop Mauricio Reggiardo taking over after a three-year stint in charge of Agen.
