Moyano double sets up Jaguares win in Sydney

A try scoring double from Ramiro Moyano set up a Jaguares win over the Waratahs in Sydney this morning. The 23-15 victory maintains Los Jaguares’ unbeaten record in Australia and places the Argentine side top of the South Africa, Super Rugby conference.

The match started out slowly. So much so that neither side was able to score any points in the opening quarter. Los Jaguares had the possession and the ball but with the Waratahs defending strongly the Argentine side would be held off.

This would change in the 25th minute when Moyano scored the opening points of the contest. The left winger did so after chasing, and gathering a kick through from scrum-half Tomás Cubelli. The sideline score would be converted by fly half Domingo Miotti to give Los Jaguares a 7-0 lead.

Miotti and his opposite, Bernard Foley exchanged penalties to complete the scoring in the opening half. This saw the home side trailing 10-3 at half-time.

In the second half the Waratahs played the better rugby but with Moyano crossing early the Argentine side were holding a commanding 17-3 lead.

With flanker Pablo Matera yellow carded in the 55th minute the Waratahs had a one-man advantage. It would be a double blow as he referee Paul Williams awarded the Australians a penalty try.

The blow was severe as the Waratahs would follow up the penalty try by scoring again. They did so via replacement outside back Curtis Rona. With it Los Jaguares lead was cut to 17-15.

Two penalties to replacement Joaquín Díaz Bonilla eased the pressure and put the visitors 8 points clear. With the defense delivering the Argentine side would be to complete the win, doing so with debutant prop Lucio Sordoni winning a penalty as the first man over the ball at a tackle.

Gonzalo Quesada’s side now travel north to Brisbane. They will face the Reds next weekend in their final match of their tour to Oceania.
