The Houston SaberCats traveled to Gold Stadium in Marrero for the second time this season after their new home at AVEVA Stadium was deemed not ready for action. With the Gold pressing for first overall heading into the match, the SaberCats entered as heavy underdogs under interim coach Paul Emerick.
New Orleans handed a first start to Eagles cap Alex Maughan at prop, but otherwise fielded a relatively stable lineup. Houston opted for the towering Victor Comptat at lock with captain Matt Trouville moved to the blindside flank, and welcomed back star scrumhalf Santiago Arata after a long injury absence.
