Uruguay XV out-perform South American Champions

The Uruguay XV outperformed the South American champions this afternoon, winning 38-19 in Osasco, Greater São Paulo. The victory over Brazil sees the Uruguay XV well positioned with a 2-0 record in the Sudamérica 6 Naciones A.

While the final score favors the Uruguay XV it was Brazil who dominated early proceedings. A strong start from Os Tupis saw Daniel Lima continuing off from his hat-trick against Paraguay to score the game’s opening try.

Those in attendance joined the Brazilian players in erupting with excitement but it would have added to an early lead had Lucas Tranquez landed a 3rd minute penalty try. Tranquez would miss a second though Brazil had try-line fever.

Try two from Os Tupis came in the 14th minute. It would see captain Yan Rosetti leading by example. From a set-piece the hooker threw short before regathering the pass and charging forward. He got through a tackle from Manuel Diana before off-loading from the ground to Luiz Vieira who scored.

Trailing 12-0 the Uruguay XV appeared rattled. They would not be blamed for panicking, especially with fullback José Iruleguy forced off after just 15 minutes. However, rather than cave in, they would quickly go about responding to their northern neighbors.

The Uruguay XV opened their account in the 18th minute, doing so with one of the best tries likely to be scored in all of 2019. Iruleguy’s replacement Felipe Etcheverry set it up as he ran from deep, dodging three Brazilian defenders, passing, and receiving the ball back before kicking in-field for Tomás Inciarte to chase and gather. Inciarte then fed an unmarked Federico Favaro who scored under the posts.

Twelve minutes later the scores were level as the Uruguay XV went over for their second. While their first was a classic running try from the backs the second was a trademark score from close range. Hooker Germán Kessler spotted the line and dotted down the ball from a pick-and-go.

In the final minutes before half-time the teams would trade tries. Brazilian captain Daniel Sancery scored a solo try down the left flank while Felipe Aliaga went over with time up. Federico Favaro’s conversion secured a 21-19 lead.

Favaro would continue the scoring on the other side of half-time. A 42nd minute penalty saw the Uruguay XV claiming the only points of the game’s third quarter.

In what was a disappointing second half for Brazil the Uruguay XV took charge of the match. They would cross for two tries, the first of which punished Brazil as a clearance from Tranquez was charged down with center Agustín Della Corte capitalizing.

Before scoring another try the Uruguay XV extended their lead through the boot of Favaro. The starting right wing is a wider roster player but one likely to go to RWC 2019. Another pushing is replacement Manuel Blengio who went over for the game’s final score.

With the loss Brazil cans ay goodbye to their South American title. They now must regroup and travel north to Minas Gerais state to face the Argentina XV next weekend in Belo Horizonte. The Argentina XV are unbeaten after two rounds as are the Uruguay XV who face Colombia at home next weekend.
