Americas Rankings – May 12 2019

Round one of the Sudamérica 6 Naciones A is in the record books. In what opened the second edition of the expanded South American Rugby Championship there were three matches, one of which counted towards Americas Rankings.

The match with rankings points on the line took place in Asunción, Paraguay. The home side was up against Brazil in a fixture which, in past RWC cycles, was a South American classic. With Brazil’s heavy investment into leading players a massive gulf has opened between the test teams.

Brazil’s win over Paraguay saw Os Tupis setting a new record for points scored against their south-western neighbors. The 66-10 result sees Brazil rising from 58.42 to 59.05 points, a gain towards Canada in the Americas Rankings and both Portugal, and Namibia in the World Rankings.

For Paraguay the effect sees them falling further below Colombia, their opponent next weekend in the Sudamérica 6 Naciones A. Paraguay’s loss represents a drop from 49.59 to 48.96 points.

The Argentina XV were 79-3 winners over Colombia while the Uruguay XV were 39-32 winners over Chile. With the ‘next of XV’ being involved in both fixtures no rankings points were on the line. The same will be true next weekend with Brazil at home against the Uruguay XV, and Chile facing the Argentina XV in Tucumán.
