Brasil battered Paraguay in Asunción this afternoon, claiming a 66-10 victory to begin their defense of the Sudamérica 6 Naciones A. The win was record breaking with Brazil scoring their highest ever total against Paraguay.
Brazil’s tremendous progress was evident throughout the match. The dominant scrum was responsible for the opening points which came in the form of a penalty try.
The scrum would also be prominent in the second try. This time it would lay the platform for André Arruda to barge his way over, emulating the trademark carries of England’s Billy Vunipola.
A feature of the Brazilian backs was the use of players out of their regular positions. This was true with Lucas Tranquez playing fly half, and de Wet van Niekerk, and Robert Tenório starting in the mid-field. Brazil’s third try would be scored by van Niekerk after a superb break from fullback Daniel Sancery.
The try had come in the 23rd minute and three minutes later van Niekerk had his second. Both scores were converted by Tranquez which gave Os Tupis a 28-0 lead.
The first half domination would continue with Brazil both keeping Paraguay scoreless and also running in another try before half time. A cross-kick from Tranquez saw winger Daniel Lima touching down for the first of what would be three tries for the match.
In the opening minute of the second half Lima had try number two. It would be unconverted yet 47 minutes into the game and Brazil had a 45-0 lead. They scored their second try of the half with the scrum again demolishing Paraguay as they won their second penalty try of the match.
Paraguay responded in the 50th minute to open their account. Scoring was inside center Diego Argaña. The former Yákares captain darted down the blindside to catch Os Tupis off guard. The score would be unconverted as would Paraguay’s second, and final score by second-rower Mario Bravo.
While Bravo’s score was an impressive case in point of pick-and-go, control, and pressure Brazil were firmly the better team throughout. They would cross for three more tries with Lima score one and both Robert Tenório, and Michael Oliveira claiming one try each.
Both teams will play again next Saturday. Brazil will do so at home against the Uruguay XV in São Paulo while Paraguay are to travel north to face Colombia in Medellín.
