Old Glory signs PRO veterans Kunkel and Reid

Old Glory DC has added a couple PRO Rugby regulars to their roster for their upcoming spring campaign. Former Ohio Aviators utility back Chris Kunkel and San Francisco Rush scrumhalf Michael Reid have joined the incoming Major League Rugby side.

Kunkel, 26, started only one game for the 2016 runners-up but featured in 9 out of 12 matches during the season. Capable of playing flyhalf, center, or fullback, at 6’2″ (1.88m) Maryland native is an imposing figure with the ability to take on the line and offload. He spent a season with Richmond in the UK and represented the Capital Selects in 2017 while playing club rugby for Rocky Gorge.

Originally from Durban, South Africa, 23-year-old Reid moved to Virginia before high school and then spent two seasons playing for Taranaki’s age grade sides in New Zealand before earning selection to the USA u20 side. He split time with Devereaux Ferris for the Rush in 2016, then moving on to the Austin Huns and was part of the 2018 Austin Elite side though he spent much of the season on the disabled list.

Nine players in total have now been confirmed by Old Glory. Front rowers Mo Katz and Will Vakalahi are joined by loose forwards Michael Fletcher and Josh Brown. Midfield duo Zack Forro and John Sage have been confirmed, as well as rugby league international Ryan Burroughs. Old Glory will play their first match against Irish club side Shannon RFC on May 19.
