Jaguares outdo Brumbies in Buenos Aires

Los Jaguares were 20-15 winners over the Brumbies this evening in Buenos Aires. They did enough to outdo the Australians and claim a third consecutive Super Rugby victory. In doing so the Argentine side moves up to 6th place overall with 23 competition points.

Gonzalo Quesada’s team were very well structured with all of the experience in having been the Head Coach of Racing 92, Stade Français, and Biarritz clear on display in his native Argentina.

The victory saw Los Jaguares keeping the Brumbies scoreless in the second-half as a Domingo Miotti penalty would be the only points after half-time. The Australians had a series of opportunities from five meters out and a one man advantage with Marcos Kremer having been yellow carded.

This was very different to that of the opening half. In just the second minute of play Los Jaguares would score the opening try. It came from a break from former Brumbies scrum-half Tomás Cubelli. The Jaguares no 9 broke clear and put in a well-weighted cross-kick for Sebastián Cancelliere to chase and score from.

The Brumbies hit-back smartly. Crossing for two quick tries from Folau Fainga’a, and Tom Banks they would put themselves 12-5 ahead at the completion of the opening quarter.

The highly even contest would see fierce contests in both the set-piece, and open play. Getting the upper hand the Argentine side would score in the 30th and 34th minutes. The first saw Matías Orlando scoring a questionable try in which he darted his way over after Pete Samu had assumed he had been held in a tackle.

The second saw neat footwork from Cancelliere who fooled the Brumbies defense before linking with Emiliano Boffelli. Quick recycled play then saw the ball spun to Santiago Carreras who, in his first start, would chip, and regather close to the try line. Cubelli then marshaled the forwards with Agustín Creevy darting in on an angle for the try.

With time up in the opening half the Brumbies would take a shot at goal to set up a 17-15 half-time scoreline. His opposite, Domingo Miotti, would cancel it out in the 61st minute in what was the only remaining score in the match.

The win was the third in-a-row for Quesada’s Jaguares. It was also the beginning of eight straight matches without a bye. Next up is a home game against the Stormers, a team who are tied with Los Jaguares on 23 competition points but have played one more match.
