South Americans in MLR – Week 14 Preview

Week 14 of Major League Rugby (MLR) will be a busy one for South American players. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay are all to have players taking to the fields. This is the case despite NOLA Gold having a bye.

Opening week 14 will be a Friday clash between the Glendale Raptors and Rugby United New York. It will not involve South American players though the picture will be different on Saturday, and Sunday.

On Saturday the Utah Warriors and Austin Elite will look for rare wins. The Warriors have one win this season while the Elite are winless. The fixture will be of vital interest to both to add to the winning column. Looking to help the Warriors’ cause will be Brazilian fly half Josh Reeves and flanker Arthur Bergo.

In addition to the Tupis duo the match will also contain three Uruguayans, an Argentine and a Chilean. The Elite’s backline has four South Americans with Teros Rodrigo Silva and Andrés Vilaseca forming the 10-12 combination; JP Aguirre outside Vilaseca; and Marcelo Torreabla at scrum-half. Starting at loose head prop will be Juan Echeverría.

In Canada a further two Uruguayan players will be in action for the Toronto Arrows. Named to start together for the first time in MLR in the back-three are Leandro Leivas, and Gastón Mieres. They are to do so for the Arrows against the Seattle Seawolves.

Also playing on Sunday will be the Houston SaberCats against the San Diego Legion. Line-up’s for this match are not yet confirmed though it is expected that up to four more Uruguayan players will be involved. They are prop Mateo Sanguinetti, second-rower Diego Magno, No8 Alejandro Nieto, and scrum-half Santiago Arata.
