It was an historic day in Houston on Saturday as the new home of the SaberCats – AVEVA Stadium – opened its doors for the first time. While it was billed as a soft opening, it gave fans a preview of what will soon be one of the premier venues in Major League Rugby. The turf wasn’t quite ready for battle but that didn’t stop the players from putting on an entertaining show for those in attendance.
Houston handed new signing Deion Mikesell his first start while two others – Jamason Fa’anana-Schultz and Thretton Palamo – would make their debuts as replacements. Seattle welcomed back Api Naikatini to the run-on side and had their own first-timer on the bench in Scottish prop Ryan Youngman.
