Canadian international Patrick Parfrey has joined the Toronto Arrows for the remainder of the Major League Rugby season. The 27-year-old Newfoundland native arrived shortly after the conclusion of the Americas Rugby Championship and is available immediately for selection.
Parfrey adds experience and versatility to a squad already deep in backfield options. Since making his test debut as a center against the USA in May 2013, he has collected 27 caps in all with his 18 subsequent starts split between flyhalf and fullback.
Finding a spot in the Arrows starting lineup may be difficult however with New Zealander Sam Malcolm securing the No10 shirt and competition at fullback coming from Wales u18 cap Jack Evans, Uruguay’s Gastón Mieres, and budding Canadian star Theo Sauder.
Should he make an MLR appearance it would not be the first run for Parfrey in an Arrows shirt. He previously started at flyhalf in two exhibition matches against Glendale – the first ever Arrows game at Infinity Park in September 2017 and the return match at York Lions Stadium one year later.
Also training with the squad in recent weeks has been 21-year-old flyhalf Will Kelly, who made his test debut as a replacement against Brazil in the ARC. His standing contract with the Dragons in Wales, however, will preclude him from playing with the Toronto franchise for the time being.
