Argentina and USA advance to Hong Kong Quarter Finals

Both Argentina and the USA have advanced to the Cup Quarter Finals at the Hong Kong sevens, though neither have done so in decisive fashion. Los Pumas were beaten convincingly by France in their final pool match, while the USA somehow pushed through despite losing both of their games on Day Two.

Two tries from Luciano González Rizzoni helped Argentina come from behind to beat Portugal in their first match of the day. They would not be so lucky in the second game as France would score three unanswered tires in the second half to hand the Pumas a sound defeat.

A Carlin Isles hat trick wasn’t enough to see the Eagles past Wales as both Madison Hughes and Stephen Tomasin were left on the bench. Luke Treharne’s conversion late in the game proved the difference. Conversions were again the difference against England as Ben Pinkelman crossed for three tries only to see Dan Bibby’s accurate boot denying a victory.

Canada started their day in defeat as France were comfortable winners thanks in part to a Remi Siega double. A better showing against Portugal ended with Canada as 19-12 winners but their opening day loss to Argentina consigned them to the Challenge Trophy draw.

The USA will face a done of the tournament favorites South Africa in the first Quarter Final, with Argentina up against fan’s choice Fiji in the second Quarter Final. Canada will play in the fourth Trophy Quarter Final against Kenya.
