USA, Argentina off to winning starts in Hong Kong

Both the USA and Argentina came through the opening day of the Hong Kong Sevens on a winning note. Canada are the third Americas team entered in the HSBC Sevens Series event and they were on the short end of the result against the Pumas.

The Men’s Eagles were in good form to start their tournament as they bested Spain by 36-7. Stephen Tomasin led the way with two tries with singles from Matai Leuta, Martin Iosefo, Carlin Isles, and Brett Thompson. Next up is a match against Wales, who dropped their opening match to England.

Argentina faced Canada to kick off Pool B. Tries from Matías Osadczuk, Santiago Álvarez, and Luciano González Rizzoni gave the South Americans a 19-0 lead. The Canadians responded via Justin Douglas and Connor Braid but could not ultimately made up the gap before full-time.

Los Pumas will play invitational side Portugal next, while Canada square off against France. Les Bleus were one-sided winners in the other Pool B match with forward Tavite Veredamu scoring a pair of tries.

Other results saw Samoa and South Africa each convincing winners in Pool A, and Pacific rivals New Zealand and Fiji each coming through cleanly in the first round of the Pool C matches.

The tournament continues this evening with live broadcasts available on ESPN across the Americas with CBC Sports streaming the tournament for Canadian viewers.
