Chile are off to a perfect start in the pool stage of the Men’s Core Qualifiers at the Hong Kong Sevens. Los Cóndores earned dominant wins over the Cook Islands and Uganda on Day One to set up an all-important match against Germany with top stakes in Poool G on the line.
Felipe Brangier led from the front, the captain grabbing two tries in a 31-5 win over the Cook Islands to start Chile’s tournament. The star of the show against Uganda was Rodrigo Fernández, who scored two tries and 16 points in the 33-7 result against Uganda in the second match.
Their third pool match will be against Germany, who also advanced through the first two games undefeated though in decidedly less convincing fashion. It took a late Sebastian Fromm try to stave off Uganda in their first match, with Claude Brechenmacher’s try securing the 10-7 win over the Cook Islands.
Uruguay fell to Russia 26-0 in their first match, a disappointing result. They redeemed themselves somewhat against Ireland with a 26-all draw. Felipe Etcheverry scored two tries for a personal haul of 16 points while Terry Kennedy’s hat trick led the way for the men in green.
Jamaica also lost to Ireland, by a 26-0 score, but as had Uruguay the Crocs improved in their second match. They would ultimately fall 26-10 to Russia but had tries scored by Omar Dixon and Mikel Facey.
In Pool E there will be an important match between Tonga and Hong Kong as both came through with a perfect 2-0 record on Day One. A loss will not eliminate either, however, as the top eight teams will qualify for the Quarter Finals.
The second day continues this evening with all matches streamed live by World Rugby.
