Uruguay have named some of their most promising talents in a 12-man squad to compete at the HSBC Sevens Series Core Qualifying bracket of the Hong Kong Sevens. Los Teros are the second seeds from South American, with Chile earning the top spot after claiming victory in the Sudamérica Sevens Series earlier this year.
There is no room for veterans Gabriel Puig or Guillermo Lijtenstein, with 24-year-old forward Manuel Castro now a senior player in the squad along with 23-year-olds Diego Ardao and Eugenio Plottier. The latter pair are among five returnees from the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens.
Valentín Grille was part of the team in San Francisco, who along with rangy forward James McCubbin played in last year’s World Rugby u20 Trophy tournament. Playmaker Joaquín Alonso made his 15-a-side test debut in February during the Americas Rugby Championship.
Los Teros are in Pool F at the tournament. They will compete against Ireland, Russia, and Jamaica in the opening rounds. The winner of the Qualifier bracket will earn a spot as a core team on the 2019-20 HSBC Sevens Series.
