The Houston SaberCats have announced the signing former Lindenwood flyer Deion Mikesell. It’s a timely addition following the suspension of star winger Josua Vici, but also comes as a bit of a surprise.
In December it was confirmed that Mikesell would be joining Top 14 club Clermont Auvergne on a short term academy deal. A verbal agreement to join up with the NOLA Gold in Major League Rugby upon his return state-side was also in place. The circumstances since, however, have changed.
With Tim Maupin, Joeli Tikoisuva, and most recently Nick Feakes proving quality wingers and salary cap space limited, Houston became a more attractive opportunity for Mikesell. He should slot into a starting role immediately in Vici’s absence.
Mikesell, 22, already has two test caps to his name. He won his first as a starter against Uruguay in the 2016 Americas Rugby Championship, then a second coming off the bench against Brazil in the 2017 ARC. He also appeared for the Junior All-Americans against Canada in 2017.
