Baker and Barrett ruled out of Hong Kong 7s

Perry Baker and Danny Barrett have been ruled out of the upcoming Hong Kong Sevens. The flagship event of the HSBC Sevens Series will be without two of the circuit’s biggest stars after the injured duo were left out of the Men’s Eagles squad to travel on the Asian leg.

Baker suffered a broken jaw while playing against Tonga in the first game of the Hamilton Sevens. Barrett fractured his arm against South Africa at Las Vegas. Both will miss out on the Singapore tournament as well but are eyeing a return for the European leg that begins in London on May 25.

In the meantime coach Mike Friday has named a 15-man traveling squad, with the final 13 to be confirmed closer to the start of the April 5 kickoff in Hong Kong. Carlin Isles has been in top form on the wing in Baker’s absence, while Matai Leuta deputises for Barrett in the forwards.

The Eagles enter the tournament in 1st place overall. They have been drawn in Pool D after their fourth-place finish in Vancouver, with England, Wales, and Spain their opponents in the opening stage of the three-day event.
