Bermuda overpowered Jamaica in a test match on Saturday to book their place in the 2019 Rugby Americas North (RAN) Championship. Bermuda’s 43-14 victory sees the island nation secured of a place in this year’s top elite regional competition.
The match was a promotion / relegation match which determined who would play in this year’s RAN Championship division. The fixture itself was significantly overdue with Jamaica last having played away to Bermuda in 1975.
The fixture itself was established based on the results from 2018 international competition. The countries were in different divisions of RAN. Jamaica competed in the RAN Cup against Barbados and were 37-29, and 50-14 winners in the two-match series.
Bermuda competed in the 2018 RAN Championship and were competitive yet winless. They were beaten cleanly 48-28 lby the USA South Panthers; 27-24 by Trinidad & Tobago; and 20-19 against the Cayman Islands.
With Bermuda assured of a place in the 2019 RAN Championship the official calendar can be drawn up and released to the public. It is not yet confirmed as to who will be competing due to the Americas Rugby Challenge (ARCh) which this year will see the Cayman Islands competing in place of Guyana. The Caymans will join Colombia, Mexico, and Paraguay.
