Brazil is opposed to the creation of a World League without promotion / relegation. The Confederação Brasileira de Rugby (CBRu) released a statement declaring the leaked plans as being against the global expansion of rugby.
It follows yesterday’s published letter from Uruguayan Rugby President Pablo Ferrari who raised concerns about the World League. The URU is seeking clarification from World Rugby, noting a concern to the World League, deeming it to be closed, protecting those involved.
The CBRu echoes the concerns of the URU. The statement released today notes that the launch of the tournament and the format proposed go against the expansion of the game as only 12 countries would be involved.
The statement also notes that rugby has a serious problem as evidenced by RWC 2019 having 19 of the same countries who competed in RWC 2015. Yet the one different competitor is to be Russia who qualified due to Romania having been disqualified for fielding ineligible players.
The CBRU also pointed out that the new League will limit the growth of the rugby, thereby bringing it into direct conflict with the goal of making rugby a truly global sport.
Brazil is one of the fastest growing unions today. Since joining the Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) it has overtaken Chile and has recored wins over Canada, and the USA in addition to a win in Europe against Belgium.
