Chile lock Saavedra suspended for three weeks

Condores lock Clemente Saavedra has been suspended for three weeks after a judicial hearing in Canada. The 21-year-old, whose twin brother Domingo plays scrumhalf for the team, was found guilty of striking Canadian prop Cole Keith during the match in Langford on Friday evening.

The act occurred in the 53rd minute when Saavedra took exception to Keith’s tackle on his teammate and hit the prop with a swinging arm on the deck. Saavedra then followed it up with two short jabs to the face. While he was sanctioned with a yellow card during the match, judicial officer Bruce Kuklinski decided the act met the red-card threshold and handed out the suspension.

Saavedra will miss Chile’s remaining Americas Rugby Championship matches against Brazil and the Argentina XV. He will be free to play again on March 18, and has opted not to appeal the decision.
