The season is over for DTH van der Merwe. The Canadian speedster has undergone shoulder surgery and will play no further part in the Glasgow Warriors’ 2018-2019 campaigns in either the Pro 14 or the European Champions Cup.
Following the successful surgery van der Merwe has begun rehabilitation and will now be targeting a return in the lead-up to RWC 2019.
The 32-year-old has 55 caps for Canada. He made his debut against Barbados in 2006 and has gone on to play in three RWCs. At RWC 2015 he made history by becoming the first player to score a try in all four of his country’s pool matches.
Canada will be looking for him to return to full fitness. The Canucks will play against the USA, Fiji, and Tonga in July and August. Their RWC 2019 campaign will begin in Fukuoka on September 26 against Italy. Subsequent matches will be against New Zealand, South Africa, and Namibia.
