Cayman rout Guyana to qualify for Americas Rugby Challenge

The Cayman Islands will make be the fourth team at the Americas Rugby Challenge later this year as they recorded a one-sided 58-14 win over Guyana in George Town on Saturday afternoon. Picture-perfect conditions set the stage for a spectacle of attacking rugby as the fans were treated to a nine-try performance from their home side.

David Stringer was a key figure for the Caymans throughout, and the scrumhalf was the first to cross the line for an early try. After a brief stalemate the second score came from Mikey Wilson who had the pace to make the corner after a huge miss-out pass from Morgan Hayward.

Two long-range efforts came before halftime. The first was from captain Killian Everard who raced clear around the outside. Hayward added the extras and sent over a penalty goal and there was still time for one last score before the break.

It was flanker Paul Westin who did the honors, breaking clear from halfway and showing his pace to make the line. That made it four tries to none for the home side and with the score 29-0, the door looked all but shut for Guyana.

There would be three more tries before the Green Machine would find the scoreboard. A penalty try from a scrum, largely thanks to heavyweight tighthead prop Peter de Vere, and then well-worked scores from midfielder Justin Wight and a second for Westin put the result beyond any doubt.

To their credit Guyana would fight for two of their own before the end. Lively inside center Godfrey Broomes had been carded earlier after repeat team infringements and he made up for it finishing off a line break by standout second row Vallon Adams. A second try would come from outside center Ronald Mayers on an offload from Richard Staglon.

Two more tries came to the Caymans through Barry John Goude and Shane Westin. The final score read 58-14 with the Caymans leaving no doubt who should join Colombia, Mexico, and Paraguay in the 2019 edition of the second-tier Americas tournament.
