RFU Championship – Week 14 Preview

The Championship returns after a week’s break with one game on Friday evening and five on Saturday. With a number of players off on international duty there are only five Americas players in action this week, three Canadians and two Argentines.

Shane O’Leary will be watching Canada’s ARC contest against Brazil from afar tomorrow night, but first he’ll suit up for Nottingham in their match against Yorkshire Carnegie tonight. Nottingham are propping up the mid-table while Carnegie have recovered from a horrendous start to the season to move nine points out of relegation danger.

Saturday’s match at the Athletic Ground in Richmond is the most interesting for Americas fans with three starters in the Cornish Pirates lineup. Brett Beukeboom captains the side with Javier Rojas at flyhalf and Matt Evans on the wing, the latter fresh off signing a new one-year deal to stay in Penzance.

London Irish have already started to announce big-name signings for their return to the Premiership. While they haven’t clinched it yet, second-place Ealing are now nine points adrift and will need some help from elsewhere to stop the Exiles from making the jump. Segundo Tuculet returns to the Trailfinders squad this week on the bench as they host Doncaster at Vallis Way.
