Americas Rankings – February 03 2019

Test match rugby got underway for 2019 this weekend. In round one of the Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) there were two matches counting towards the Americas and World Rankings. The big winner was Uruguay.

Los Teros’ miraculous 14-man win over Canada sees the teams trading 0.31 rankings points. For Uruguay this marks a rise to 67.13 in the rankings while Canada fall to 62.64 points. There are no changes in positions in either the Americas or World Rankings for either.

Earlier in the day Chile were taken to the sword by the USA. The Eagles 71-8 victory has no impact on the rankings due to the respective points of the two heading into the match itself. The scoreline underlines the status of the two with Chile being a Tier 3 side and the USA among the best Tier 2 countries.

The Argentina XV were also impressive winners on Saturday. The 54-3 victory over Brazil did not count towards rankings. This is based on the Argentina XV being the ‘next of XV’ rather than the national test side.

Notwithstanding Argentina itself did rise in rankings this weekend. As a result of France’s capitulation against Wales on Friday Argentina is now up to 9th in the world rankings.

Americas Rankings points will be up for grabs again next weekend. In round two of the ARC Brazil play host to Canada, Chile travel to Montevideo to face Uruguay, and the USA face Argentina in Patagonia. In the Caribbean the Cayman Islands will host Guyana in a qualifier for the 2019 Americas Rugby Challenge.
