The USA have lost Perry Baker for the remainder of the Hamilton Sevens after their star player suffered a broken jaw at the wrong end of a head-high challenge from Tonga player Tana Fotofili. Baker passed his head injury assessment but x-rays revealed a fracture and he will now return home to have surgery.
Controversy followed as the referee awarded a yellow card for what was a clear red card offense. The incident can still be cited should the appointed commissioner disagree with the on-field ruling.
Baker is now certain to miss the Sydney tournament and at risk of also missing the North American leg that starts in Las Vegas on March 1st. Stepping in to his starting role is Carlin Isles while 13th-man Pat Blair has been activated for the remainder of the Hamilton tournament.
