As expected Patricio Fernández is departing Clermont Auvergne, but it won’t be home to the Jaguares. The Argentine flyhalf has inked a three-year deal with Top 14 rivals Lyon that will see him move east at season’s end having spent the entirety of his professional career at ASM.
Fernández, now 24, joined the club on a senior academy deal in 2015. He has played more than 60 matches with the first team across all competitions while playing second fiddle to France regular Camille Lopez. With new Jaguares coach Gonzalo Quesada a known admirer a move to Super Rugby looked a possibility but Fernandez has opted instead to move to France.
He remains in contention for a World Cup spot as no domestic-based players have made a claim for the backup role to starter Nicolás Sánchez. All three of Argentina’s top flyhalf options are now in the Top 14 with Sanchez joining Stade Français and Benjamín Urdapilleta a long-time starter for Castres.
