Chile win Viña Sevens to claim Sudamérica title

Chile completed an historic sevens double over the weekend as they won the Viña del Mar Sevens in style to claim their first ever Sudamérica title. After going unbeaten at Punta del Este a week ago, the Cóndores met defeat for the first time in the pool stage but recovered to dominate the second day of the competition.

The pool stage suggested that South Africa were the team to beat as they emerged unbeaten from the highly competitive Pool A. Their win over Chile brought a half to the eight-game winning streak of the eventual champions and put the South Africans in a favorable Quarter Final draw against Uruguay.

Pool B saw Colombia defeat both the USA and Canada. In another upset the young Canadian side defeated Argentina in convincing fashion. Germany came through Pool C unscathed though they faced stern challenges from Russia and Portugal.

The Quarter Finals were thrown into an uproar as Uruguay stunned South Africa in the first match. Chile then got past a confident German side and Portugal thrashed Colombia, the latter running out of steam on Day Two.

After beating Argentina in the Punta final by just one score, Chile then produced a remarkable 35-0 win over Argentina in the Semi Final. Uruguay had just enough to beat Portugal in the other Semi, but had nothing left in the tank as they were well-beaten by the Cóndores in a one-sided final.

Chilean captain Felipe Brangier was named player of the tournament.

The results confirm Chile as the 16th team at the Las Vegas and Vancouver stops of the HSBC Sevens Series. They will also travel to Hong Kong along with Uruguay to contend for core status for the 2019-2020 HSBC circuit.
