Unbeaten Chile crowned Punta 7s Champions

Unbeaten Chile have been crowned 2019 Seven Punta Champions. Los Cóndores 7’s defeated Argentina 7-5 in the tournament final inn Punta del Este, doing so with a try from Lucas Westcott with time up. The conversion saw Chile winning the match and securing the title.

In being crowned champions Chile made history. Never before in the 30 year history of the Seven Punta had Chile been tournament winners. The title came in spectacular fashion as Argentina looked to wind down the clock only for Chile to counter ruck, enabling the ball to go wide to Westcott.

Today’s play was day two of the two day tournament. For a recap of day one click here.

Chile joined South American rivals Argentina, and Uruguay in going undefeated on day one. Unlike them both, however, Chile went through the entire tournament without conceding a defeat. Argentina’s one loss was in the final.

Coming in as the third placed finisher in the tournament was Portugal. The Portuguese won their Quarter Final against South Africa but fell 24-14 against Portugal in their Gold Cup Semi Final. They faced-off against Germany in the Silver Cup Final, winning 19-5.

Day two saw heavy rain and thunder storms in the evening. This caused a delay in the kick-off between Portugal and Germany. Ultimately it saw the Bronze Final fixture between the USA Falcons and South Africa suspended. With it the Falcons were crowed Bronze Cup winners without the match taking place.

The four bottom performers from day one also competed again today in Punta del Este. They did so in the Honor Cup. Brazil’s disastrous opening day performances were not improved on which saw them winless in the tournament to finish last overall.

Colombia claimed a 24-21 win over Brazil to finish 11th. Ahead of them were Paraguay and Russia, both of whom won their respective Honor Semi Finals.

The teams will now travel to Viña del Mar, Chile to play again next weekend. The 2019 Seven Viña is to be the second of two legs of the 2019 Sudamérica Rugby Sevens tournament. The overall winner from South America, excluding Argentina, will qualify for this year’s Hong Kong, Las Vegas and Vancouver 7’s tournaments.
