New York secure Seimou Smith for MLR season

Rugby United New York have secured one of the standout newcomers in the Major League Rugby preseason. Seimou Smith has put pen to paper on a deal that will see him suit up for the expansion franchise in the 2019 season after impressing as an outside center in exhibition matches against the New England Free Jacks and the Capital Selects.

A wide receiver as a walk-on for the SCSU Owls football team, Smith earned All-Rookie Conference honors. He then began playing rugby for the Black Attack which saw him selected as a Division II Sevens All-American. The 23-year-old was identified by coach Mike Tolkin while playing for New Haven in an Empire GU match last fall.

Smith joins a strong group of midfielders that includes World Cup starter Seamus Kelly, Eagles Sevens cap Chris Mattina, and Irish import Will Leonard. The New York backline will also feature former Leinster flyhalf Cathal Marsh, Eagles XVs speedster Luke Hume, and England international Ben Foden.
