The San Diego Legion have added a 34th player to their roster. Waratahs prop Matt Sandell will suit up for the 2019 Major League Rugby season joining fellow Australian Paddy Ryan in the Legion’s front row ranks.
Sandell, 23, earned international honors for Australia in the 2014 and 2015 World Rugby u20 Championships. A replacement in 2014, he was first choice tighthead prop in the 2015 tournament that saw Australia finish in 5th place.
After earning his first Waratahs contract as a loosehead prop in 2017, Sandell would suffer season-ending knee injuries that ruled him out of the entirety of both the 2017 and 2018 Super Rugby seasons. He recently returned to action with the Sydney Rays in Australia’s National Rugby Championship. The youngster will now look to revitalize his career with a stint in MLR.
Sandell is one of 11 new additions to the San Diego roster for the 2019 campaign. The Legion reached the Semi Finals in the inaugural 2018 season, losing out to eventual champions Seattle at Infinity Park.
