Reborn Pampas XV Set To Join Currie Cup

Argentina’s ongoing discussions to join South Africa’s Currie Cup are proving to be successful. Within weeks the Pampas XV is set to be reborn to again play in South Africa.

From 2010-2013 the Pampas XV competed in South Africa’s Vodacom Cup competition. In 2014 and 2015 the team went on to instead compete in the World Rugby funded Pacific Rugby Cup. The team secured titles in both South Africa and Oceania but became defunct leading up to Argentina joining Super Rugby in 2016.

After three years of Super Rugby the UAR is in need of expanding their player base. Opportunities are limited at Los Jaguares and South Americas future professional rugby competition will not be ready for 2019.

UAR President Marcelo Rodríguez explained that:

“We are very close to be able to put our Pampas XV team into the Currie Cup. There are still a few details to clear-up yet, and they will be finished in January. As of today it is not all finalized but we are close”.

In addition to the Pampas XV Rodríguez also confirmed that there are to be two Argentine junior teams (u18s, and u20s) competing in South Africa. The UAR President thanked South Africa for the close relationship and support Argentina receives.

The Pampas XV are to be based in Potchefstoom in South Africa’s north-west province.
