Uruguay is lining up a home game vs Los Jaguares. Set to be confirmed for January 26 the fixture will be a pre-season match for both teams in the led-up to the Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) and Super Rugby competitions.
The occasion is to mark the inauguration of the of the new lighting facilities at the Estadio Charrúa, Uruguay’s national rugby stadium. The Montevideo venue has been upgraded ahead of the u17s Women’s Soccer World Cup.
The Estadio Charrúa is to host the opening match of the 2019 ARC with Canada looking for revenge after losing both at home and away in the 2018 fixtures.
For Uruguay the fixture is a second opportunity to take-on Los Jaguares. In 2017 the then Raúl Pérez coached Jaguares completed a 61-3 hammering of Uruguay in Buenos Aires.
Since then Pérez has moved on to become Head Coach of Paraguay while Los Jaguares have changed coaches twice. This year’s edition of Super Rugby saw Mario Ledesma in charge with him subsequently replacing Daniel Hourcade at Los Pumas. The team is now under the direction of Gonzalo Quesada.
The fixture in Montevideo is set to be the debut appearance of the Quesada regime. In replacing Ledesma he completed a return from France where he had taken Stade Français to the French Top 14 title in 2015.
Quesada’s first Super Rugby match will be a baptism of fire. Los Jaguares are to play at home against the Lions (South Africa) on February 16. They will remain in Buenos Aires for rounds two and three where they will play host to the Bulls (South Africa), and the Blues (New Zealand).
