Championship Cup – Round 6 Preview

While the top flight clubs are participating in Europe the RFU Championship has been on hiatus since the end of October. Those clubs have instead been participating in the new Championship Cup, essentially a reserve grade competition that has replaced the British & Irish Cup.

With league fixtures set to resume next weekend some of the first team players are picking up extra game time, and there are seven Americas exports set to play the final round of the round-robin tournament. All six matches will be played on Saturday with four worth noting.

Cornish Pirates will host London Irish at the Mennaye and club captain Brett Beukeboom will start in the second row. Argentine international Javier Rojas has begun his Pirates career in strong form but will settle for a spot on the bench.

Will Hooley was in top form for Bedford last weekend and he will again start in the No10 shirt for the Blues against Hartpury. Canadian flanker Justin Blanchet rotates to the reserves.

A pair of flankers will go head-to-head at Vallis Way. Andrew Durutalo is at openside for Ealing with Argentine blindside Adam Lee starting for Richmond.

Canada tighthead prop Jake Ilnicki is on the bench for Yorkshire Carnegie against Coventry. Ilnicki is now the only Canadian at Carnegie following the departure of Dan Moor to the Toronto Arrows.
