Cordero Smashes Champions Cup Record for Tacklers Beaten

Argentine winger Santiago Cordero left his mark on the Champions Cup his past weekend. The 25-year-old set a new record for tacklers beaten in the Exeter Chiefs’ home match against Gloucester on Saturday.

Playing right wing Cordero beat 17 defenders in the match. No other player has beaten more than 13 in a Champions Cup game since Opta have recorded data, dating back to the 2009-2010 season.

Despite Cordero’s magnificent form in the match the Exeter Chiefs were beaten. Gloucester were 27-12 winners at Sandy Park to keep the Chiefs winless in Pool 2 of the Champions Cup.

The two sides will compete again on Friday, this time with Gloucester having home advantage.

Cordero departed Argentina to join the Exeter Chiefs early this year. It saw him not playing for Los Jaguares to instead continue his professional playing career in the English Premiership. He is contracted with Exeter until June 2019.

His absence has given others opportunities. In 2018 Ramiro Moyano and Bautista Delguy were revelations for Los Pumas. Cordero and Juan Imhoff are the incumbent Pumas RWC wingers though there are many more wing contenders for Japan 2019 than there were for England 2015.

Cordero has 33 caps for Argentina. Six of them came at RWC 2015 where he scored three tries. In total he has 13 test tries for Los Pumas.
