Argentina win Challenge Trophy in Cape Town

Argentina have won the Challenge Trophy at the Cape Town Sevens. After being knocked out of Cup contention on Day One, they salvaged the best possible result on Day Two with three wins in succession to finish in 9th place overall.

Having running out to a 34-5 lead in their first match of the day Los Pumas almost fell to an historic collapse as the Kenyans scored four tries in five minutes to lose by a mere three points in the Trophy Quarter Final. Ignacio Mendy was the hero for Argentina with three tries.

A slow start against Canada in the Semi Final saw them trailing 14-5 at the break, but two yellow cards opened the door for three Argentine scores including a second for Lautaro Bazán Vélez. Franco Sábato followed with a double in the 38-14 Trophy Final win over Samoa.

Despite the 9th place finish Los Pumas maintain their 8th overall position and currently sit two points behind 7th place Scotland.
