Paddy Ryan arrives in New York

Paddy Ryan will suit up for Rugby United New York in the 2019 Major League Rugby season. The US Eagles tighthead prop packed down for his new club for the first time on Saturday, scoring a try and showing his scrum prowess in a 20-minute replacement appearance against the New England Free Jacks.

A former Ireland age-grade representative, Ryan was born in Chicago and made his USA debut against the country where he grew up in June 2017. After professional stints in Italy, France, and England he joined Austin Elite for the 2018 MLR campaign but made only three appearances due to injury.

The addition is not just a boost to New York’s scrum but also potentially the Eagles. Ryan has proved one of the best eligible scrum technicians at tighthead and a full season in MLR could earn him a recall to international honors ahead of the World Cup.

Five props suited up for New York on Saturday, all American-eligible. Collegiate All-American loosehead Brian McKellar and Scottish utility front rower Callum Mackintosh also featured for the side during the spring exhibition series, while two overseas additions are expected to be confirmed soon.
