New York signs Eagles Sevens cap Chris Mattina

Rugby United New York have signed US Eagles Sevens international Chris Mattina for the 2019 Major League Rugby season. The 25-year-old Manhattan native returns to his home state after spending the past year on the HSBC Sevens Series, where he traveled to 8 of the 10 stops on the circuit.

Mattina will find many familiar faces in the team having started his rugby career under Mike Tolkin at Xavier High. He also played club rugby for NYAC. While at Chula Vista he was listed on the San Diego Legion’s roster for the 2018 MLR season but did not make an appearance.

While able to cover multiple positions in the backline, it’s in the midfield where Mattina has been used primarily. He could find himself alongside World Cup starter Seamus Kelly in a backline that also lists former England fullback Ben Foden, Leinster flyhalf Cathal Marsh, and Eagles winger Luke Hume.
