Men’s Eagles earn first ever Silver in Dubai

The USA Men’s Eagles earned their best-ever finish at the Dubai Sevens, taking Silver after reaching the Cup Final on Saturday. As they did in the women’s bracket, New Zealand proved the best team at the tournament and took home the top spot in the season opener. Argentina would finish in 8th overall with Canada closing their account in 11th place.

A dramatic finish in the Semi Final against Australia saw Danny Barrett barge over in the corner with time expired to send the Eagles into the final. It was the Perry Baker show in the Quarter Final against Fiji, the World Rugby Player of the Year scoring two tries to lead the way in an impressive performance.

Argentina were comprehensively beaten by Australia in the Cup Quarter Final, unable to score even a single point. They regrouped somewhat in their consolation round match against Fiji with Marcos Moroni scoring a double but the Pacific Islanders were a step ahead and outscored the Pumas five tries to three.

After a challenging opening day Canada opened up on Zimbabwe with six tries, two from Matt Mullins to coast into the Trophy Semi Finals. There they encountered a determined French side who had their number and ended the Maple Leafs’ tournament early with a convincing win.

England would take the Bronze after beating Australia by a single point thanks to a last-gasp Harry Glover try. Defending circuit champions South Africa stumbled to 6th place after falling to Fiji in their final match of the tournament.

The Series continues next weekend in Cape Town, South Africa.
