Colombia’s Zafra scores match winner to make Top 14 history

Colombia’s Andrés Zafra scored the match winner for Agen today. His 78th minute try saw him making history, becoming the first Colombian player to score a try in the Top 14. The score saw Agen defeating reigning champions Castres on the road, a result which was also the first away win for Agen this season.

Zafra was a replacement for Agen. He would enter the match and make the crucial play. Spotting former French test scrum half Rory Kockott going for a box-kick, Zafra executed a charge-down and chased to go over for the try.

Aged 22, Zafra has been in France since the age of 19. He initially moved to Givors in France’s 5th division, the Fédérale 3 in January 2016 before going Lyon and now Agen.

He comes from Los Carboneros club in Cúcuta. He played u19 and u20 levels for Colombia in 2012 and 2013. While still a teenager he made his debut for the senior test side, doing so in the 2014 South American B Championship. Zafra was named player of the tournament in Peru, a competition involving Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.
