Salaber picks law over Legion

The San Diego Legion will be looking for a new midfield star after it was confirmed that Anthony Salaber will not be returning to the team for the 2019 season. Originally reported by DJ Coil Rugby, the 24-year-old Cal Berkeley product has instead opted to step away from Major League Rugby entirely to pursue a law degree in Sacramento.

From a rugby perspective it’s tough news for Legion fans, who saw Salaber emerge as one of the most promising midfielders in MLR during the inaugural season. He started every game for San Diego, first as an outside center and then shifting inside when JP du Plessis was injured. The five tries scored by Salaber in the regular season was topped by only three players across the league.

Salaber’s unique combination of size and deceptive pace made him difficult to defend with his offloading ability creating line breaks for others around him. His performance was rewarded by selection to the USA Select XV squad for the Americas Pacific Challenge.

Another opting out of a spot with the Legion is Austin Taefu. The GCU utility back had only recently joined the team but with two years left of collegiate eligibility he has decided to return to his studies.
