As it turns out Matt Hughston’s time with the New England Free Jacks was only temporary, at least for now. The former New Orleans Gold flanker skippered the Free Jacks in their inaugural match against the Ontario Arrows a week ago. He has now confirmed a move to Rugby United New York for the 2019 Major League Rugby season.
With New England not due to join MLR until the 2020 season the suggestion was that some of their players would go on loan for the coming months. Hughston, however, made it clear on the MLR Kickoff podcast that he was free to sign with New York and not under contract with New England, though he did not rule out a return to the Free Jacks in 2020.
Hughston is the third new signing for New York, following European imports Ben Foden and Cathal Marsh. Returning players officially locked in for the 2019 season include Dylan Fawsitt, Nate Brakeley, Ross Deacon, Mike Petri, Seamus Kelly, Luke Hume, Michael St. Claire, and Connor Wallace-Sims.
